That nation’s president and prime minister resigned after being arrested.
The State Department has responded to developments in the situation in Mali. That nation’s military had taken over its government in August of last year, overthrowing former president Ibrahim Boubacar Keita. The international community has expressed concern and put pressure on the military to back down.
State Department Spokesman Ned Price said, “We support the May 24 joint statement of ECOWAS and the African Union, and we are working closely with the local transition monitoring committee and other international actors to seek the immediate and unconditional release of those detained and resumption of the civilian-led transition.”
Malian Vice President Assimi Goita, a colonel who orchestrated the coup, has said that the planned elections for 2022 will proceed.
